Wellness Wednesday- Digital Safety: Protecting youth from harm on the internet
September 27, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm,
Join Heather Steele from Safe Journeys as she presents:
Digital Safety: Protecting youth from harm on the internet.Keeping young people safe on the internet is of increasing concern for many caregivers and educators, and for good reason. The digital age has brought many amazing advances to our society, but with that comes very specific challenges. Most youth have access to the internet via their smartphone, home computers, school computers, and tablets. Young people cannot avoid the internet but can avoid potential harm. This presentation will help inform people who are looking to understand what harms young people face on the internet and how to reduce or eliminate those harms. Attendees can expect to learn about sexting, exploitation, grooming, online enticement, blackmail, and child sexual abuse materials. This presentation is geared towards adults but will also benefit tweens and teens.
Heather Steele has been serving as the community engagement specialist at Safe Journeys for just under three years. Heather holds a BA in psychology and an MSc in public health. As part of her role, Heather serves as a podcast co-host, social media coordinator, and provides power based violence prevention programming and services at IVCC. She is a self described science nerd with a passion for social justice and health equity. Heather is dedicated to empowering survivors, working to create safe environments for young people, and uplifting marginalized communities.
