    Join Jessamine Chan and Emily Maloney for a discussion about the systems of power that impact our lives, our families, and our finances, through the lens of their acclaimed books, The School for Good Mothers and Cost of Living.

    Jessamine Chan is the New York Times bestselling author of The School for Good Mothers, her debut novel. Her short stories have appeared in Tin House and Epoch. She holds an MFA from Columbia University and lives in Chicago with her family.

    Emily Maloney is the author of Cost of Living, a collection of essays. Her work has appeared in Glamour, Virginia Quarterly Review, and Best American Essays, among others. She holds an MFA from The University of Pittsburgh and lives in Evanston, Illinois, with her partner and their dog.

  • Read Beyond the Beaten Path Summer Reading Challenge Begins

Come along with us this summer as we Read Beyond the Beaten Path, encouraging exploration of all the library offers.   • Doggie Tales with Ms. Julie and Ruby & Lila

    June 7, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pmYouth Services, Lower Level of the Library

    Registered children 3- 8 years will learn about therapy dogs and how they help people in our community. Then children will quietly listen as each child takes a turn reading to Ms. Julie and her canine companions. Pre-readers can simply "read" a story as they put the story into their own words based upon the pictures in a book. Afterwards, Ms. Julia will assist each child in performing a trick with the Ruby or Lila.

    This is a quiet activity where the audience is asked to refrain from private discussions so all can enjoy the experience.

    Registration is limited and required. Register by contacting Youth Services at 815-223-0229 ext. 214 or stopping by the library.

  • Birds of Prey Presented by Northern Illinois Raptor Rehab and Education Event

    This is a live bird of prey educational and entertaining event open to the public without registration. Representatives from Northern Illinois Raptor Rehabilitation and Education showcase non-releasable birds of prey and the audience will:

    • Learn what makes a raptor a raptor and the basic anatomy and physiology of a raptor
    • Develop an understanding of the role raptors play at the top of the food chain.
    • Understand how some species have learned to coexist with humans and how w can live and thrive together.
    • Gain knowledge about rehabilitation and conservation.
    • Be inspired by what we each can do to ensure these magnificent creatures are with us always.

    Best for children preschool age and older as younger children may become overwhelmed by the birds of prey.

  • Story time at Washington Park for Kids 3-7 Years of Age

    June 13, 2022 @ 9:30 am - 10:00 amPeru Washington Park at the Summer Arts & Crafts Shelter facing West Street

    This outdoor interactive story time located at the Summer Arts & Crafts shelter faceing West Street at Washington Park begins promptly at 9:30am.

    Provided in conjunction with the City of Peru, children ages 3-7  enjoy stories, music and movement. Registration is requested with the Peru Public Library and may be made by calling 815-223-0229 ext .214 or in person in the Youth Services Department in the lower level of the Peru library.

    A responsible individual must remain with the children at all times during the program. City of Peru sponsored Arts and Crafts will immediately follow the story time. Families are invited to visit the Peru Library after story time and register children for the summer reading challenge and enjoy library activities.

  • Hidden Natural Treasures of Illinois with Chris Benda

    Illinois is large and biologically diverse with many pristine natural areas located across the state. Join botanist Chris Benda for a tour of the unique natural areas and rare plants that can be found in the 14 different natural divisions in Illinois. This program will highlight places you never knew existed, with emphasis on the plants and animals of Illinois.

  • Create a Positive Affirmation Mala bracelet with Rock & Soul's Christy Donahue. For children 8 thru 12 years

    June 14, 2022 @ 9:30 am - 11:00 amUpon arrival, check in at the Youth Services desk in the lower level of the library.

    Kids 8 thru 12 years gather with Utica’s Rock & Soul’s owner and instructor Christy Donahue to create a Positive Affirmation Mala bracelet. Repeating positive affirmations as a mantra help children focus on their self-worth to replace negative self-talk. For each bead represented on the bracelet, participants chose a positive affirmation such as: I am kind, I am responsible, I am a friend, I try my best, and I am important etc. Children will be encouraged to take time each day to focus upon their Mala bracelet and repeat their positive affirmations.

    Registration is required and space is limited.  Register by stopping in at the Peru Library, Youth services Department. A non-refundable activity of fee $5.00 per participant is payable at the time of registration.  Cash or check made to Christy Donahue are preferred methods of payment.

    Historical Significance:  With a deep history, the word “Mala” originated in India and referred to a method to mark the passing of days or employed as a method of accounting. Rudraksha seeds were strung into necklaces. Today, Mala necklaces and bracelets are sometimes worn as simple fashion accessory or utilized in prayer, meditation or yoga as a way to remain focused.

  • Starved Rock Adventure Hike for kids entering 2nd thru 4th grade

    June 15, 2022 @ 8:45 am - 12:30 pmMeet at Starved Rock State Park at 8:45am.

    Registered participants and their chaperones join Ms. Lynn and Lisa Sons, Natural Resource Coordinator of Starved Rock State Park on a guided 1.5 hour hike.  Using our senses, we will explore the park. Perhaps we will spy some hidden animal homes or identify some birds by their calls.  Each day  in nature is different so expect an adventure of the unknown. The hike is led by Lisa Sons and takes place only on approved trails. No off trail hiking or exploration is allowed. 

    Following the hike there will be a 30 minute break for lunch etc.  We then join artist Mary Janusick at Eagle Roost Cabin and learn about nature art journaling. Supplies will be provided. Once the nature art journaling activity is completed, families will be on their own.

    • Only children entering 2nd thru 4th grade may be registered for this experience.  
    • Because of registration limitations and requirements for parental or guardian chaperones, once a registration is approved, any changes or substitutions must be approved by the Youth Services Manager.  
    • It is requested that anyone wishing to cancel a registration, do so as early as possible so other children may participate.  
    • Unfortunately, younger and older children will not be able to join this experience. 
    • Participants must remain with their chaperones at all times and chaperone substitutions can only be made by giving the library advance notice.  Library personnel are not considered any child's chaperone. 
    • Should weather pose a safety risk, the hike will be cancelled. Unfortunately, the library is not able to provide a rain date for this activity.
    • All participants need to:
      • Eat a good breakfast before the hike. Bring a snack, a lunch, and plenty of water.  Be aware food can spoil in the heat, so plan accordingly.
      • Dress appropriately for the hike. Wear a hat, wear closed shoes (sandals and crocs not recommend. 
      • Consider sunscreen and bug spray of your choice

  • Wiggles & Giggles for Children 1-3 years

    This 30 minute fun and interactive class for children 1-3 years includes short stories, music and movement. As appropriate scarves, shaker eggs, wrist bells, and tapping sticks are provided for a more hands on experience.  Activities in the Youth Services Department follow this program. 


    Recognizing children 1 -3 years are on the move, this class is designed to be flexible. Sometimes this class goes as planned and sometimes we flex to the needs of the children. Generally, it requires attendance at more than 1 experience for children to engage in the songs and fingerplays, and that's okay. 


    Sometimes children have an off day. With that in mind, it is okay to remove your child from the class and visit the youth library in the lower level of the library. As we ease back into programming, after class activities may be provided as we get to know the "little people" in our class.  

    Registration is required for participation. Calling 815-223-0229 ext. 214. or stop by the library to register.  Class size is limited and walk-in families are allowed to join only if space is available. If less than four children are in attendance for the class, the class will be canceled and participants invited to visit the Youth Services Department.

  • Woodland Racoon Critter Paint Along with Lucy Schmidt for kids 8 thru 12 years

    June 16, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pmUpon arrival, check in at the Youth Services Desk in the lower level of the library.

    Kids 8 thru 12 years of age will have fun with this paint along event, exclusive to the Peru Library this summer.

    Registration is required and made by stopping by Youth Services in the lower level of the library. A non-refundable $20 activity fee is payable at the time of registration. Cash or a check made out to Lucy Schmidt are preferred forms of payment.

    Participants should dress appropriate for a painting activity. Paints can stain clothes.
