  • Wiggles & Giggles Best for Ages 1-3 Siblings Welcome

    This 30-60 minute fun and interactive class for children 1-3 years includes short stories, music and movement. As appropriate scarves, shaker eggs, wrist bells, tapping sticks and flannel boards are provided for a more hands on experience.  Optional activities in the Youth Services Department follow right after the class. 


    Recognizing children 1 -3 years are on the move, this class is designed to be flexible. Sometimes this class goes as planned and sometimes we flex to the needs of the children. Generally, it requires attendance at more than 1 class for children to engage in the songs and fingerplays, and that's okay. 


    Sometimes children have an off day. With that in mind, it is okay to remove your child from the class and visit the youth library in the lower level of the library. 

    Registration is required for participation. Calling 815-223-0229 ext. 214. or stop by the library to register. Walk-in families are welcome to join. If less than four children are in attendance for the class, the class will be canceled and participants invited to visit the Youth Services Department. 

    In case of inclement weather, call the library or visit us on Facebook for class updates.

With this in mind, the library reminds our patrons and guests masks are optional and social distancing may not be possible during our community events, classes and programs.     Join us for an evening with two-time National Book Award winner Jesmyn Ward as she discusses how her literary vision and personal experiences address urgent questions about racism and social injustice.

    Ward, hailed as “the new Toni Morrison” by the American Booksellers Association, is the author of fiction, nonfiction, and memoir, including the critically acclaimed novels Sing, Unburied, Sing and Salvage the Bones, and the memoir Men We Reaped. In 2017, she became the first woman and first person of color to win the National Book Award for Fiction twice. A professor of creative writing at Tulane University and contributing editor to Vanity Fair, Ward’s many honors include the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction, a MacArthur Genius Grant, and a Strauss Living Award.

    This event is made possible by Illinois Libraries Present, a statewide collaboration among public libraries offering premier events. ILP is funded in part by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library, a department of the Office of Secretary of State, using funds provided by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).     Registered children 3- 8 years will learn about therapy dogs and how they help people in our community. Then children will quietly listen as each child takes a turn reading to Ms. Julie and her canine companions. Pre-readers can simply "read" a story as they put the story into their own words based upon the pictures in a book. Afterwards, Ms. Julia will assist each child in performing a trick with the Ruby or Lila.

    It's a "Come & Go at Your Convenience Halloween event." A self-paced evening of fun for kids ages 3-9.
    Stories read at the top of the hour. A picture scavenger hunt, games, crafts, I SPY, and a Halloween Photo Backdrop to be enjoyed by all. Take home good bag available while quantities last.

  • Brick Builder's Club for Kids 5-12 years Siblings Welcome

    Come for an evening of brick building with Lego's® on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month.
    There is no fee to be in this club.

    Builders 5-12 years enjoy themed building challenges each session or can build their own designs. Kids build from 6-6:45 pm and each builder can present his/her design to the club members beginning at 6:45 pm.

    Lego® bricks are provided. Please do not bring Lego® bricks or figures from home. Lego designs remain on display for at least 1 week. Call 815-223-0229 ext. 214 to make an initial registration. Walk-ins welcome.
