The Coal City Public Library District and the Carbon Hill Historical Society created a database listing information about coal miners who were injured or killed in mining accidents within the First District of Illinois between 1882 and 1927. The database also lists the names of men certified as hoisting engineers, mine managers, and mine supervisors in the First District for the same time period. The information is significant because northern Illinois is where the first coal was discovered in North America by explorers Marquette and Joliet within the boundaries of what was to become the Illinois First Coal Mining District. The database is accessible from the Coal City Public Library District website, selecting the Local History/Genealogy and then choosing Coal Reports. The database is named Coal Reports of Illinois First District Index.
