Youth programs beginning Fall 2022
Youth Services hosts weekly classes September thru April each year. June and July class schedules are modified during the Summer Reading Challenge. For information about Summer sessions, visit our Summer Reading Challenge page.
All of these youth classes are free. Siblings of class participants are always welcome to join in the fun. Registration is required and is made by calling 815-223-0229 ext. 214.
Please note: The library reminds our patrons and guests masks are optional and social distancing may not be possible during our community events, classes and programs. Patrons or guests exhibiting signs or symptoms of possible illness are kindly requested to refrain from attendance at in-person programs, events or classes until their signs or symptoms are gone.
Bounces & Tickles, is a first group experience for babies not yet walking and caregivers. Participants explore the fun of stories, songs, and lap bounces & lifts. Playtime and occasional fun creative activities follows each session. This class is hosted in the lower level of the library. This program in on hiatus for 2022. Check back in 2023 for class dates.
Wiggles and Giggles, a free 30-45 minute class for children 1 to 3 years, is a fun interactive weekly class. This class is hosted in the upper level of the library.
Recognizing toddlers are on the move, this class incorporates lots of movement, music, shakers, scarves, wrist bells and tapping sticks. Toddlers benefit from routines and with that in mind, the class begins and ends with with the same songs each week. As children gain confidence and skills, new activities such as flannel boards and parachutes are added. Lastly, children and their caregivers participate in creative hands on activities after class. Activities may involve the use of glue, glue sticks, and paints. Please dress your child for creative fun.
Keep in mind, sometimes children have an off day and have difficulty remaining engaged in the class. With that in mind, it is okay to remove your child from class and visit the youth library in the lower level of the library.
Lastly, if less than four children are in attendance for this class, the class will be canceled for the day and participants invited to visit the Youth Services Department.
Little Tykes Story Time is a class designed for preschool children. Families enjoy the fun of stories, music, movement, make-and-take activities, and more. Activities are provided after class any may involve the use of glue, glue sticks, and paints. Please dress your child for creative fun. This class is hosted in the lower level of the library. Along with our youth programs, we have fun activities available for children. Availability of activities varies.
- Sensory Play Bins – Children gain new information through their senses of sight, touch, smell, and hearing. The bins encourage exploration and play with each bin filled with different objects and materials.
- Dramatic or Pretend Play Center – Children learn through play and our centers offer experiences where children can role play, discover, and use their imagination. The Dramatic Play Center changes monthly. Examples of themes include an apple and pumpkin orchard, bakery, pizza shop, and post office.
- Art and Make & Take Activities – Children’s creativity is encouraged by our Make & Take activities and Stay & Make activities.
- Play Center – Children enjoy playing with developmentally appropriate toys, puzzles, and other activities after class as caregivers meet and greet.
